I shudder to think of where this country, no, where this world may be today were it not for the CBC. I never cease to be impressed with the balance and scope of coverage CBC journalists provide us with. How many abuse of power incidents have the CBC publicized, as though everyone had the right to know what goes on behind closed doors in governments and businesses around the world. By contrast, has anyone ever considered CanWest global et al. to be bastions of journalistic excellence? Now I'm not condemning their reporting outright, because I'm sure there are many good people involved with their organization, but fairness and well rounded reporting is not what they are known for. They are known, as far as I can tell, for their unipinion pages really, and for their sheer size!! They are a mammoth player on a global scale, in the business of public information, which is used by the public to form opinions, beliefs etc, and to form governments! Its unnerving to think of the global effect this organization has by influencing the mindset of the influential i.e. Canadian business people, voters, and would-be social activists, indeed most, if not all, Canadians have been in contact with the products of Canwest global, many without even realizing it. I don't understand why there are no restrictions on the growth of this type of company. Why are both of British Columbia's major dailies owned by the same company?? Where is the balanced journalism our world needs as governments around the world fight transparency as if it were the latest epidemic! Why not level the playing field somehow, eh, Mr. PM whoever you turn out to be? I know, let's tax 'em! Then we could fund smaller journalistic endeavours, rewarding indiviual effort with bursaries and grants, prizes for integrity, an awards show on CBC!! I can see it now.
As to the comment about how CBC is not something Canadians asked for, its ridiculous. Everyone wants fairness in government. Who, sir, is watching like a hawk when a politician does or says anything? Who is asking these people the sort of questions that ordinary citizens cannot ask of individual politicians, (or scientists, or artists, or musicians, or backyard inventors)? For me, it's the CBC. Anyone who says they don't want the CBC anymore must have something to hide.
